Smart Cities Expo 2016: The Cool Gadgets
Francesca Brady

United Arab Emirates police robot (shown above)
This likable android will soon assist airport and shopping mall visitors in Dubai. For now, it can help people report a minor crime, call an officer and pay a fine. Although somewhat basic, it has a few surprises in store such as facial recognition, conversational abilities, and even a sense humor. We witnessed it asking passers-by’s for a sip of lithium to quench its thirst!

The HoloLens
Or rather, an app developed by Taqtile for HoloLens to render city augmented reality landscapes using Bing 3D. We tried it, flew over the city of Seattle, and played around zooming, rotating, and switching locations with voice commands. Data like traffic, tweets and weather forecasts can be overlaid on the 3D map. Multiple people in the room or even in separate locations can take part in the same collaboration session. A real glimpse into the future!

The smart rubbish collection system
This electric lorry comes equipped with an antenna to detect the location of RFID-tagged bins. A weighting scale determines how much rubbish each unit has, enabling councils to experiment with a “pay as you throw” model.  This technology comes from Terberg RosRoca Group and is currently being tested in Germany, Norway, and Belgium.

The smart herb garden
No more green fingers needed with these "click and grow" pots. They come equipped with a nanotech growth medium that gives plans the perfect amount of water, oxygen, and nutrients. Simply plug it in, fill the water tank every five weeks and let the LED do its magic.
