3D printing is transforming the construction industry – and it’s here to stay!
Francesca Brady

The latest generation of 3D printers are finding practical applications across many fields, including urban architecture. The largest printers can be used to construct office spaces at a fraction of the average price, opening up some exciting possibilities. When combined with technologies like the IoT based Asset Mapping system, 3D printing can be leveraged to create smarter, more affordable and more eco-friendly buildings.

For those who are not familiar with the latest trends, here is a brief overview:

Can a 3D printer really produce a whole building?

Apparently, the answer is yes! Starting with a digital blueprint, large printers that look like cranes, place multiple layers of building materials precisely and quickly, with the ability to create unique and futuristic structures. The process requires minimal human intervention, while results are very consistent.

This technology has recently reached new heights;  the world’s first 3D office was recently unveiled in Dubai, and since then, several more impressive feats have been achieved, Eindhoven is rumoured to be the first place in the world to offer habitable homes made by a 3D printers. The Dutch city expect to have properties to rent as early as next year.

What are the advantages of buildings made with 3D printing?

3D printed buildings are often significantly cheaper to produce than their brick and mortar equivalent, with some recent projects costing an impressive 50% less. American startup ICON has produced a prototype for an affordable 3D printed home which is expected to eventually cost as little as $4,000! These futuristic buildings can also be constructed extremely quickly – some small units can be completed in around 24 hours. In addition, disruption to the building site is minimal, while the amount of waste is significantly smaller than with traditional brick-and-mortar builds. Since these printers are mobile, they can also be used to create buildings in less accessible locations. Taken together, these features position 3D printing as serious competition to traditional building methods, and provide hope of affordable future office solutions for companies of any size.

What is the future of 3D printed buildings?

The first prototypes used simple designs that didn’t deviate too much from typical traditional constructions. However, new possibilities are tickling the imagination of architects, and innovative forms are appearing that would never before be practically feasible. We hope to see a new wave of organic-shaped, eco-friendly, cost-effective office buildings in the future.

It’s never too early to start planning your own dream office. In addition to 3D printing, there are other readily available technologies that can dramatically improve the quality of your office space. Asset Mapping is the ideal solution to help manage any building, old or new. Our innovative platform allows you to remotely view all aspects of your building/s in real-time; from air quality to operating system efficiency. Without needing to replace existing hardware, you can easily map, monitor and measure the things that matter to you and receive notifications before issues occur. We help you, your operational staff and your team work faster and smarter! find out more about what we can offer.
