An optimal response to 4 critical IoT issues
Francesca Brady

The Internet of Things (IoT) is quickly gaining traction as a viable method of controlling large networks that include large numbers of heterogeneous physical assets. Practical benefits to organisations in all lines of business are vast, driving adoption of this technology across the business spectrum. There are still a few obstacles to be cleared before IoT technology is widely accepted, and the industry is working hard to find appropriate solutions for current business problems. Based on experiences from the field, the following actions bear the greatest significance for successful implementation of an IoT system:

Picking the right sensors for the right job / problem

Versatility of IoT systems can be a trap, with a nearly unlimited number of parameters that can be tracked — too much information can cloud the bigger picture. Smart organisations resist the urge to collect data indiscriminately, and deploy sensors capable of measuring variables that affect business processes in a meaningful way. A good choice of input devices makes the network more economical and easier to manage, decisions should be based on a realistic projection of essential business needs.

Deep data integration

With data arriving from so many sources and being sent to so many different parts of the network, displaying the most valid data across the system is the first priority. This can only be achieved if all incoming data is stored in the cloud and updated in real time. In a well organised system, rights of access and priority rules are clearly defined, ensuring that time-sensitive information is not delayed and delivered when required.

Supporting growth

It’s normal for an organisation to evolve over time and introduce new items into its asset network. It’s also important to limit the costs associated with increasing the number of IoT devices connected to the network, and avoid adding new sensors for every new task. It is more prudent to reconfigure the existing hardware to support expansion than to enlarge the physical infrastructure.  This can be achieved by adjusting current devices and systems as much as possible to conduct additional operations based on requirements.

Security challenges

While some devices in the network may be more vulnerable than others, the security system is generally expected to account for all possibilities. Two approaches can be used to this end:
1. policy-driven device management — enables “rules” to be associated with an asset.
2. role-based access control — dynamically assigns user roles based on criteria set by system admin.

Obviously every company needs to formulate its own framework based on the unique conditions and threats typical for its business niche. However, there are certainly benefits to pursuing an IoT based smart system. Contact us today to find out how we can help you.
