The CCS’s new FM PIN
Michael Grant

With the old framework set to expire, Crown Commercial Service (CCS) has prepared a new platform that will guide facilities management efforts in the UK in the coming years. It has officially published a Prior Information Notice (PIN) announcing the changes related to its upcoming tender worth 12 billion pounds. This is a good occasion to discuss the role of facilities management in the modern-day business landscape and the ongoing evolution of this discipline in response to new challenges. The industry has changed dramatically over the past decade thanks to hardware and software innovations offering more benefits than ever before.

Here is everything you need to know:

A trend towards proactive Facility Management (FM)

With advanced software tools for asset management becoming widely available, the FM industry is moving towards a digital landscape. This process is well underway, and the new PIN will most certainly confirm this orientation in an official language. The advantages of proactive facilities maintenance are simply too good to ignore, with many business premises now including ‘smart technologies’ that enable active monitoring of key parameters even during periods when nobody is in the office. This approach can create significant savings, boost productivity and extend the lifecycle of the property.

Educating a new generation of tech-savvy FM professionals

It is laudable that the government is actively involved in regulating the UK FM industry since this positively impacts awareness. Business owners, alongside the general public, need to be informed about the latest advances in terms of process automation and cloud-based asset monitoring and new guidelines are a good place to start. Greater awareness about the possibilities might lead to the more frequent implementation of smart and/or green technologies in large-scale public or private projects, which will, in turn, increase the demand for FM services.

Developing national standards

The UK is a global business leader with a strong IT sector, so it’s only logical for this country to be at the forefront of FM innovation. The CCS has organised multiple events where FM providers can gather information about the new framework, allowing them to adapt their models. This process goes a long way towards establishing a national consensus regarding good practices and legal limitations.

In a discipline where innovations are frequent, maintaining fair competition may sometimes be a little tricky. Clarification of the new framework is intended to eliminate confusion and outline which practices are unacceptable. At the CCS-sponsored events, providers can learn about the administrative requirements and other relevant details related to the announced tender, while also exchanging opinions with their colleagues. Ideally, this will result in a well-regulated market where the large majority of participants adhere to high legal and ethical standards.
