How IoT technologies affect corporate security
Michael Grant

While the term ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) is already well known among the general population, the main advantages of this innovative concept remain somewhat of a mystery. An exact set of benefits that can be derived from an IoT implementation depends on the architecture of the solution and its intended purpose, however, in many cases additional security is one of the desired effects. Here are some areas where IoT technology can make a significant impact:

Defence against fire or flooding

Facilities that are under heightened risk of natural disasters such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, forest fires etc, would greatly benefit from an early warning system based on wireless sensors. Of course, the same system can be very effective at minimising man-caused accidents, making its value nearly universal. The alarm can be raised at the first sign of fire or flooding inside the protected object, enabling owners to scramble an emergency response before the damage becomes extensive.

Prevention of theft or physical intrusion

CCTV cameras, motion sensors and other gadgets of this kind are quite helpful for deterring thieves, corporate spies, and other unwanted guests. Just a simple fact that your property features high-tech security equipment might be enough to give intruders pause and send them elsewhere. Presence of an advanced electronic monitoring system with IoT capabilities reduces the pressure on your security personnel and increases the effective range that each guard can comfortably cover.

Timely identification of critical failures

Sometimes, the biggest danger is coming from within, as parts of the essential infrastructure (i.e. gas pipes, insulation, electrical installations, structural walls…) could decay over time. If the building is actively monitored in real-time, weak spots can be found and fixed before they cause danger for building occupants. IoT solutions collect data from various sources and notice automatically when a certain parameter doesn’t match the expected value, allowing for quicker repairs.

Location tracking during transport

Placing electronic chips on delivery vehicles empowers the company to follow its goods along the entire route and react by contacting the driver if the shipment goes off its normal course. This ensures good delivery times and reduces any opportunities for abuse or robberies along the way, while also providing an additional layer of security in case of a traffic accident. As fully automated, driverless vehicles loom on the horizon, this surveillance method will become even more sought after in the near future.

Data-based planning

Information sent by ‘smart devices’ is typically stored in a database, and can be used for statistical analysis of security features for each area separately. This wealth of information can be used retroactively to deduce the causes of past problems, or proactively to design effective protections against likely threats. Any deviations from the projected model observed in real time can be used as feedback to perfect the security system even further.

Smart networks evidently have an important role in the prevention of incidents, development of fast-response capacity and strategic protection of the valuable assets in a company's possession. Contact us today to discover more.
